A five-year-old rabbit named Cole asked, “Mum, how did you get that scar?”

Rabbit Mum then shared a story of a peculiar event from long ago that had profoundly impacted their family line for generations.

It began with the first Rabbit Mum, Cole's great-great-grandmother, named Rabbit Onez, who had a twin sister named Rabbit Twez. They were the most beautiful and admirable young female rabbits in their entire rabbit community.

This community had protocols to ensure a healthy, cooperative society. On their 15th birthday, in accordance with tradition, they had to make a significant choice like any other young female rabbit of that age.

Birthdays of this kind were huge celebrations where all rabbits paused their activities to organize a grand event. It was the biggest occasion in the community, the topic of everyone's conversations for years, months, and days leading up to it.

On the day of the celebration, the community gathered around the "Magic Hole," where hearts and minds were tested for strength to ensure the longevity of the Rabbit Community. The hole tested the rabbits' courage to resist the temptation to break protocols.

Historically, more rabbits failed the test than passed it, which made the Rabbit Community strong and their spirit formidable. They believed it was their individual triumph at the Magic Hole that contributed to their collective strength.

It was now the twin sisters' turn to prove their strength. The community loved the twins very much.  Everyone hoped for their successful encounter with the notorious Magic Hole, which had the power to crush weak minds and cripple timid hearts for life.

Rabbit Onez and Rabbit Twez took their positions at the Magic Hole as the spirits of the hole began their luring tactics. Everyone waited patiently, rooting for the twins to rise to the occasion. No one was prepared for what happened next.

In a harmony far sweeter than anything heard before, the spirits sang a one-word song, repeating the same word over and over again: 'Jump! Jump! Jump! Jumb!' They sang it in different ways, each more enticing than the last.

Rabbit Twez emerged victorious as everyone had expected.  Rabbit Onez, however, succumbing to the enticing tricks of the spirits, leaped into the Magic Hole.

Rabbit Onez ended up with a scar, a mark she could not hide from her own children and the entire community. And thus, the curse began. The scar became a symbol of disgrace, serving as a reminder of a young female rabbit who lost control of her own life and jumped.

At every 15th birthday celebration, the community expected each female rabbit from Onez's line to leap into the Magic Hole and get a scar, believing they were weak and timid.

Interestingly, each Rabbit Mum in every generation tried to teach her baby female rabbit not to leap, but the result was always the same. Despite understanding the lesson and its soundness, they were powerless when they approached the Magic Hole. Years of defeat had deeply affected their minds and hearts, leaving them seemingly without a way out.

In response to Cole’s question, Rabbit Mum said, “That’s how I got my scar. Everyone in our family has one.”

Cole asked again, “Will I be strong enough to avoid getting one?”

Mum replied, “That’s up to you. It’s your turn now. I can only help you, but the choice is yours. Based on experience, I don’t think you can avoid it. It’s our curse for life.”

Cole grew up with the bitter knowledge that one day she, too, would bear a scar of shame to pass down to her own children.

Until one day, a stranger visited the Rabbit Community, and everything changed. This stranger had a peculiar method of overturning curses and offered a cup of water to drink for the cure.

Rabbit Cole grew tired of hearing about her lineage being weak and timid, unable to defeat the spirits of the Magic Hole. Before she stepped into her designated position at the Magic Hole on her 15th birthday celebration, she drank the water from the cup the stranger had offered, and the rest is history.

Now Cole has her own story to tell her daughter when asked how she managed to escape the curse that had shrouded their line in shame for generations. It’s a story of triumph, not defeat—a new day to enjoy life without this peculiar scar.

A BIG LESSON

Just like the rabbits in the story who were trapped in a cycle of shame and despair, many of us find ourselves caught in patterns of behavior or circumstances that we feel powerless to change. The scar that each generation bore is like the burdens we carry, whether it’s guilt, regret, fear, or sin.

But remember how Cole found a way to break the curse? It wasn't by her own strength but through the help of a stranger who brought a solution. This stranger is a lot like Jesus, who offers us living water—the gift of salvation and new life.

Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:37-38). He offers us the power to break free from the past and to live a life of triumph instead of defeat.

When we accept Jesus into our lives and follow His teachings, He helps us overcome our struggles and transform our future. Just as Cole was able to break the generational curse, you too can find freedom and hope in Christ.
